Background of the Study

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally, and their prevalence is rising in developing nations, including Nigeria. In Sokoto State, factors such as poor dietary habits, physical inactivity, high levels of stress, and tobacco use are contributing to the increasing incidence of CVDs. Lifestyle choices, such as the consumption of high-fat, high-salt, and sugary foods, sedentary behavior, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption, have been identified as major risk factors for CVDs. This study will explore the impact of lifestyle choices on the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Sokoto State, with a focus on identifying modifiable behaviors and risk factors that can be targeted for intervention.

Statement of the Problem

Sokoto State is facing a growing health crisis due to the increasing burden of cardiovascular diseases. However, many individuals are unaware of the role that lifestyle choices, such as poor diet and lack of physical activity, play in the development of CVDs. Additionally, traditional health practices and limited access to health education exacerbate the situation. The rising trend of CVDs in Sokoto State underscores the need for a comprehensive assessment of lifestyle choices and their impact on cardiovascular health. This study aims to provide insights into the relationship between lifestyle choices and the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases in Sokoto State, offering data to inform public health interventions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the relationship between lifestyle choices and the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Sokoto State.
  2. To identify the most significant lifestyle risk factors contributing to cardiovascular diseases in Sokoto State.
  3. To recommend lifestyle modifications and public health interventions aimed at reducing cardiovascular disease risks in Sokoto State.

Research Questions

  1. What lifestyle choices are most associated with the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Sokoto State?
  2. How do dietary habits, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption contribute to cardiovascular diseases in Sokoto State?
  3. What interventions can be implemented to promote healthy lifestyle choices and reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Poor dietary habits and physical inactivity significantly contribute to the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Sokoto State.
  2. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are significantly associated with the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in Sokoto State.
  3. Interventions promoting healthy lifestyle choices lead to a reduction in cardiovascular disease risks in Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on adults in Sokoto State, particularly those residing in urban and semi-urban areas, where lifestyle factors may vary. Limitations include the difficulty in obtaining accurate self-reported data on lifestyle behaviors and potential biases in participant responses.

Definitions of Terms
